OMG!!! FYI - it's official English!!!

OMG!!! it's official! OMG a common saying on the net for "Oh My God", Oh My Goodness", or "Oh My Gosh!" is finally accepted as an English abbreviation. It's grown out of the SMS instant messaging and social media speak on twitter and facebook and landed itself in the Oxford English Dictionary! Apparently it has been around long enough to warrant inclusion, but are they jumping the gun here? LOL! Has it really been around for that long? FYI there is an OMG facts website , an OMG news site, and several facebook and twitter sites as well, but none of them can claim to know the exact origin of the usage - but generally it's known as 'internet slang' and has been made popular in the 2000's.

Look it up in the OED! (Oxford English Dictionary) and you'll find it has been around for quite a while! The first quotation for OMG is from a personal letter from 1917, according to the dictionary.

 

The respected British dictionary Oxford English Dictionary is updated annually with new words that are added to the English language. In this year’s update a few more words from the technology world has been added to the dictionary (OED, 2011).
The latest words added in the March edition of the dictionary are as follows:

• OMG [OMG int. (and n.) and adj.]: ‘Oh my God’ (or sometimes ‘gosh’, ‘goodness’, etc.)

• LOL [LOL int. and n./2]: ‘laughing out loud’—are strongly associated with the language of electronic communications (email, texting, social networks, blogs, and so on).

They join other entries of this sort: IMHO (‘in my humble opinion’) [IMHO at I n./1], TMI (‘too much information’)  [TMI at T n.], and BFF (‘best friends forever’) [BFF at B n.], among others.

My interpretation of LOL had always been 'Lots of Love' until i discovered much later on facebook that it was about laughing :o)!
But, LOL even had a pre-tech life, starting in 1960, when the letters where short for ‘little old lady’.  And in 2009, the word “unfriend” was selected as word of the year. Unfriend is the verb used for deleting a friend on Facebook. (OED, 2011)

I wonder how long it will take for WTF?!

Looking back to the early days of the internet, our perception then of what the internet was, is quite hilarious as well as being quite ignorant of what it actually is. We thought we knew...'you know, it's a connection to your computer where you can surf the net....' But did we really know what it was or were we just guessing? and is there a difference between the internet and the www? Indeed there is....you might get a giggle out of watching this humorous recollection of CBS Newsreaders discussing what they thought the internet was!

The internet is a huge network of computers that communicate and collaborate together but what does it look like? Peer1 Hosting wondered about that too, and created a visual representation of all the internet connections around the world based on Internet topology data from the Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA) and called it The Map of the Internet.

i found flavors.me and thought it would be a good place to keep a record of all my networks in one place - i was excited to set up my 'new directory' page, but soon found out it was limited! You only get to 'add' about 4 entries or links and if you want more there is a yearly fee for unlimited use. it is only $20/year, so it is very reasonable, but for now i am just looking!

i have also been reading up on Blogging Tips and how to connect your Blogger posts to Facebook, etc. (thanks Shell!) It is still a bit complicated and i can only find directions for posting to a 'fan page' on facebook as opposed to a personal page, [see how to set up a fan page here] but a good place to start investigating if your are interested is to browse the blogger 'getting started guide' or have a look at  blogger tips and tricks.com  or wisnet.com

What is different?

The main difference i was talking about in my first post below, involves the handling of a new web presence and how difficult that has been for me. Difficult in the sense that instead of it being as easy as i expected to set up a new blog, new flickr, delicious, twitter, etc. i have encountered innumerable obstacles and challenges that were completely unexpected and resulted in a lot of wasted hours and energy. Of course there are a lot of help guides out there, and a couple of my colleagues from WEB101 are brilliant 'mentors' in the art of 'webbing' but i thought i knew what to do! I didn't realise that i would need help!! It was a big shock and as these things can be, it was a leap, rather than a step, out of my cosy comfort zone!!! So now i know where to go, i have slowed down, settled down, inserted links to my trusty new friends and mentors and going to sit back and relax and take it step by step. Perhaps this blog is changing its theme already and becoming the lay-person's version of 'how not to do it' when endeavoring to embark on a new web venture.....who knows? ...but time will certainly soon tell :o)
